How to Program most GM Key Fobs

May 30, 2007 By Andrew Hughes 173 Comments

Try this first. It worked on mine.

Close all the vehicle doors.
Insert the ignition key into the ignition lock cylinder.
Press and hold the DOOR unlock switch.
While holding the DOOR lock switch in the unlock position, cycle the ignition ON, OFF, ON, OFF.
Release the DOOR unlock switch. The doors will lock and unlock to confirm the program mode.
Press and hold the LOCK button and the UNLOCK button simultaneously on one keyless remote. After a delay of approximately 15 seconds , the doors will lock and unlock to confirm the programming of that transmitter.
Repeat the previous step to program up to four transmitters.
Turn the ignition switch to the RUN (one more click forward) position in order to exit the keyless entry transmitter mode.
Operate the transmitter functions in order to verify correct system operation

There you go!

UPDATE #1: After messing around with a couple of Key Fobs, I noticed that most owner’s manuals have the programming directions already. Check your owner’s manual first!

I will try to post a how to on programming keys.

UPDATE #2: I have tried this on a 2001 Grand Prix GTP and 1999-2002 Grand Am GT

UPDATE #3: This only works for some GM vehicles from 1996-2005.

I just bought a 98 Le Sabre. It came with one key and no FOB. How can I tell if this car is equipped with the keyless entry option?

    For a 2003 Grand Prix

    1. Remove the key from the ignition.

    2. Close all doors.

    3. Remove the “MALL PGM” fuse from the fuse panel. Use the legend on the fuse panel or
owner’s manual to properly locate the “MALL PGM” fuse.

    4. Insert the key into the ignition, and turn to the ACC position.

    5. Turn the key to OFF and then back to ACC within 1 second.

    6. Open and close any vehicle door. A chime will be heard when the system enters into
    programming mode.

    7. Press and hold the remote LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously for 14 seconds.
IMPORTANT: After 7 seconds, a chime may be heard confirming successful
synchronization. It is necessary to wait approximately 14 seconds for a second chime
    that will confirm successful programming.

    8. Repeat step 7 now for each additional remotes to be programmed including any existing
    remotes.

    9. Remove key from ignition.

    10. Install the “MALL PGM” fuse back into the fuse panel and test remote(s).

Will this work for a 2003 Saturn L300 with aftermarket Sony stereo? Most places I read say it has to be done with scan tool at the dealership? And everywhere I call they want over $50. Please help.

    Dealer only.

How do I program the key fobs on a 2004 Cadillac SLS? Both remotes quit at the same time. I have tried the “standard” GM method which does not work. Have checked the valet setting and it has not been changed, so this is not the problem. Also changed battery in one of the remotes and this was not the problem. Is programming the key fobs on 2004 SLS possible without scan tool?

To resync your fob, hold unlock and lock on each fob and the locks will cycle. If they do not, there might be a problem with the fob.

The fob cannot be unsynced from your Seville.

Your other problem is the fob can ONLY be programmed by a dealer or a locksmith. I would check with your local locksmith first. They usually charge $45-65 to program your fob.

2002 Silverado uses the same procedure as listed in this post. If the door lock will not go into transmitter mode, I would contact a dealer.

    Hello Guys,
    Thanks for your efforts.

I bought 2003 Chevy Cavalier. It has Central locking system (Switch on front-left and front-right doors) but no remote.
My dealer is not sure if it comes with the keyless entry remote.
I could buy a remote for this model but i have to know if it will work with this model?

Also I do not know how to program it with my car.
    Please help

GM Dealers can pull a build sheet to see if the Cavalier was equipped with fobs.

The 2004-2005 Grand Am’s require the dealer or a locksmith to program the fob. There is no way around it.

How can I program a key fob for a 2012 Camaro 1LT that isn’t cut yet just so I can have keyless entry

  22. Andrew Hughes says

    June 23, 2019 at 11:39 pm

    1. Insert the original, already programmed key in the ignition and start the engine.
    2. After the engine has started, turn the key to off and remove the key.
    3. Insert the key to be programmed and turn it to on within 10 seconds of removing the original key.
    4. The security light will turn off once the key has been programmed. It may not be apparent if the security lightwent on due to how quickly the key is programmed. If your vehicle does not have a security light (04-07 GrandPrix, Bonneville, Impala) wait 10 minutes and 45 seconds to make sure the key has been programmed.
    5. Repeat steps 1 through 5 if additional keys are to be programmed.
