How to Program most GM Key Fobs

May 30, 2007 By Andrew Hughes 173 Comments

Try this first. It worked on mine.

Close all the vehicle doors.
Insert the ignition key into the ignition lock cylinder.
Press and hold the DOOR unlock switch.
While holding the DOOR lock switch in the unlock position, cycle the ignition ON, OFF, ON, OFF.
Release the DOOR unlock switch. The doors will lock and unlock to confirm the program mode.
Press and hold the LOCK button and the UNLOCK button simultaneously on one keyless remote. After a delay of approximately 15 seconds , the doors will lock and unlock to confirm the programming of that transmitter.
Repeat the previous step to program up to four transmitters.
Turn the ignition switch to the RUN (one more click forward) position in order to exit the keyless entry transmitter mode.
Operate the transmitter functions in order to verify correct system operation

There you go!

UPDATE #1: After messing around with a couple of Key Fobs, I noticed that most owner’s manuals have the programming directions already. Check your owner’s manual first!

I will try to post a how to on programming keys.

UPDATE #2: I have tried this on a 2001 Grand Prix GTP and 1999-2002 Grand Am GT

UPDATE #3: This only works for some GM vehicles from 1996-2005.

Just reprogrammed an old fob from the wife’s Pontiac that she wasn’t using, for my 03 Chevy Avalanche. One thing to remember is when you program one you must do all at once, as the old one looses it’s program when you do the new one. Works great. Thanks, JoeW.

After half a day coordinating to drop my 2008 Trailblazer off at a dealer, arrange a ride to work (allowing them all day to do what they say takes an hour) your instructions came up first on the search engine…ten minutes later, my new key fobs work!!!! So if you’re keeping track, this procedure worked on my late ’08 Trailblazer…first attempt! Thank you!

PS the directions weren’t in the manual for this ’08TB, but I do remember reading them in the manual for my ’02 TB.

This worked on a 99 olds. You don’t get the queues (doors locking/unlocking) till you’re done. Then it honks once for you to let you know it worked.

Programing the GM Key Fobs worked, I had asked the Chevy dealer how much to reprogram my key fob, they told me $50.00, because I had to have the chip rescanned, They must think everyone is stupid, there is nothing in the fob to hook up to to rescan. So I found your instructions and It worked fine on our 2001 Chevy Blazer. Thanks guys. I really don’t like being lied to….

I would get on ebay and purchase the fobs from there. They are usually $20-$30 per fob. You can actually program new fobs in your Grand Prix info center. Those fobs should work IF they are from 04-08? Impala. Good Luck!

Check the owners manual. I think you can add it without any special programming. I think it is located in the “driver information center”. Good Luck!!!

All done in less than 3 minutes on 2003 Suburban LT
for 2 fobs. “Time is closer to 20 seconds for response to each programming authentication/confirmation locking. When you exit programming by turning on key switch the horn beeped once”

  33. Marko says

FYI guys, when they say that a given car & fob must be “programmed by the dealer”, I believe what they are really saying is, “on this model, instead of the on/off/on/off trick, we designed it so that you must jump 2 pins on the ALDL/DLC, and we don’t want average morons messing with that.”

On my ’97 Riviera, you simply make a small jumper wire (even a paperclip would probably do) and jump Pin 8 to Pin 4 on the Data Line Connector under the left side of the dash, where scan-tools are hooked up… Then you turn the key on, hold down your buttons on each transmitter, and remove the jumper.

I can’t guarantee it, so no warranty is implied or granted, but given the limitations on the pin assignments by the OBD-II standards, I would think that all the GM’s that need the jumper wire trick would use the same two pin numbers…

The car might not have auto start enabled. I would check your owners manual.

    Correct

  39. Andrew Hughes says

    January 26, 2010 at 2:17 pm

On the 03 Venture, you will have to go to the dealer.

  40. Andrew Hughes says

    January 26, 2010 at 2:19 pm

Check the “Vehicle Center” while the truck is in park. There should be an option for it.

  41. Andrew Hughes says

    January 26, 2010 at 2:45 pm

    You can do it yourself.

  42. Andrew Hughes says

    January 26, 2010 at 2:45 pm

    Depends on your vehicle.

  43. Andrew Hughes says

    January 26, 2010 at 2:46 pm

Has to be programmed by the dealer.

  44. Andrew Hughes says

    January 26, 2010 at 2:46 pm

    Dealer only.

  45. Andrew Hughes says

    January 26, 2010 at 2:49 pm

    Easy fix:
    1. Locate the Data Link Port. It is located under dash drivers side. Be sure you know which pins are 8 and 4.

    2. Make sure there are metal contact pins in terminals 8 and 4. Connect 8 to 4 with a suitable
jumper wire (leave the jumper wire connected throughout the programming procedure). Make
sure you know which terminals are 8 and 4. The vehicle will respond by locking and unlocking the
doors to signify entering of programming mode.

    3. Press and hold both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons together on the first transmitter to be
programmed. After about 15 seconds, the vehicle will respond by locking and unlocking the doors.
Release the buttons on the transmitter.

    4. Within one minute, repeat the previous step on the remaining transmitters to be programmed.

    5. Remove jumper wire applied to the OBDII Port.

It worked on my 03 Silverado, but there was one additional step that I discovered accidentally. After cycling on-off-on-off, the doors locked and unlocked but the fob wouldn’t program until I put the key back into the on position. Hope this helps, thanks for the great tip!

You need to remember it isn’t GM that is charging you $150. to reprogram it is the private Business you elected to go to.
Find a dealer you can trust not to rip you off or dont complain.
