Trojan Snags World Of Warcraft Passwords To Cash Out Accounts

May 5, 2006 By Andrew Hughes Leave a Comment

A new password-stealing Trojan targeting players of the popular online game “World of Warcraft” hopes to make money off secondary sales of gamer goods, a security company warned Tuesday.

MicroWorld, an Indian-based anti-virus and security software maker with offices in the U.S., Germany, and Malaysia, said that the PWS.Win32.WOW.x Trojan horse was spreading fast, and attacking World of Warcraft players.

If the attacker managed to hijack a password, he could transfer in-game goods — personal items, including weapons — that the player had accumulated to his own account, then later sell them for real-world cash on “gray market” Web sites. Unlike some rival multiplayer online games, Warcraft’s publisher, Blizzard Entertainment, bans the practice of trading virtual items for real cash.

“Win32.WOW is a clear indication that malware writers are targeting anything that involves money,” said MicroWorld chief executive Govind Rammurthy in a statement. “Bucks may be smaller compared to a Trojan that steals bank accounts or credit card numbers…[but] cyber criminals are not complaining as long as the target is soft and numbers are high.”

The Trojan spreads via traditional vectors, such as e-mail and peer-to-peer file sharing, added Rammurthy, but it has also been watched while it installs in a drive-by download from gaming sites’ pop-up ads. The surreptitious installation is accomplished by exploiting various vulnerabilities in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer Web browser.

Identity thieves have aimed at Warcraft previously. Just over a year ago, players were warned about a campaign that collected passwords from a bogus log-in site.

A Bill to ban cyber-gambling?

May 4, 2006 By Andrew Hughes Leave a Comment

taken from: Reuters.com

A U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee on Wednesday approved a bill that would ban Internet gambling, estimated to be a $12 billion industry.

The legislation would update and expand an existing federal law to cover all forms of interstate gambling within the United States, and would bar a gambling business from accepting payment in the form of credit cards, checks, wire and Internet transfers. It would also prohibit gambling on an estimated 2,300 Internet gambling sites.

Shares of some British-based gaming companies fell on news that the bill had progressed another step. PartyGaming Plc and 888 Holdings tumbled about 5 percent each on the London Stock Exchange.

The bill was approved on a voice vote by the House Judiciary subcommittee on crime. It will go to the full committee for consideration.

However, it remains unclear whether the legislation will reach floor votes in the House and Senate. Congress has a relatively short schedule this year because of the November congressional elections.

“Virtual betting parlors have attempted to avoid the application of United States law by locating themselves offshore and out of our jurisdictional reach,” said Rep. Bob Goodlatte, a Virginia Republican who wrote the bill. The offshore companies use Internet sites that are “unlicensed, untaxed and unregulated,” he said.

Under U.S. law, interstate gambling over telephone wires is illegal and other gambling is banned unless regulated by the states.

Joey Styles… SHOOTS!!!

May 1, 2006 By Andrew Hughes Leave a Comment

Here is what I got that Joey said from WWE Raw last night:

“You want to apologize? Like nothing happened. Like you didn’t knock me on my ass in front of millions of people worldwide, and I’m gonna come down there and work with you. I’m not coming back, and now thanks to the magic of live television I’m gonna show the whole world, why for seven years in ECW I was the unscripted, uncensored, loose cannon of commentary. Six months ago, WWE called me, I didn’t call this company because I was looking for a job. I didn’t need a job. WWE called me because they had humiliated and fired…again, Jim Ross. So I get JR’s spot, and from week one, week after week I’ve got an ongoing lecture about the differences in professional wrestling and sports entertainment. I’m not allowed to say ‘pro wrestling’, I’m not allowed to say ‘wrestler’. I have to say ‘sports entertainment’ and refer to the wrestlers as ‘superstars’. I’m told to deliberant ignore the moves and the holds during the matches so I can tell stories. Well ignoring the moves and the holds is damn insulting to the athletes, the ‘wrestlers’, not the entertainers who leave their families three hundred days a year to ply their craft in that ring. Here’s the best part, because I’m not a sports entertainment storyteller I get pulled from Wrestlemania, and the reason I’m given is, is because I don’t sound like Jim Ross who’s the guy they fired in the first place. That makes sense, right? So I swallow the bitter pill, I’m a company guy. I get bumped from Wrestlemania. Then I get bumped from Backlash? I’m not good enough to call Backlash!? In ECW, I called live pay-per-views on my own, solo, no color commentators dragging me down. Wasn’t done before me, hasn’t been done since. But I’m not good enough to call Backlash because I’m not a sports entertainment storyteller. Well you know what? I am sick of sports entertainment. I am sick of male cheerleaders. I am sick of boogers and bathroom humor and semen and I am sick of our chairman. Who likes to talk about his own semen, he mocks God… he mocks God!!!!! And makes out with the divas all to feed his own insatiable ego. I am sick of sports entertainment, and most of all I am sick of you fans who actually buy into that crap! This sports entertainment circus! I never
needed this job, and I don’t want this job anymore… I QUIT!!!”

I know it is only 2 hours after the incident, but is this real? I doubt it. I think they would have cut the feed Joey was on. ECW? Wait and see.

EA brings Madden to Revolution

April 28, 2006 By Andrew Hughes Leave a Comment

taken from: Gamespot

EA Canada QB details popular pigskin franchise’s debut for Nintendo’s new console; with new controller, popular football series won’t be just about pushing buttons. Exec says EA Rev games won’t be straight ports.

Electronic Arts hasn’t unveiled its full lineup of games for next month’s Electronic Entertainment Expo yet, but one title that the publisher has confirmed will make its debut at the show in playable demo form is that of it flagship franchise on a new console. The ever-popular Madden franchise gets the call for Nintendo’s next-gen console and is tentatively titled Madden Revolution. It’s important to note that the game isn’t simply titled Madden NFL 2007 for the Revolution–that’s because no gamer has seen a Madden quite like this one.

For the first time in years, development on a major console version of EA’s marquee franchise football series is being taken outside the doors of the company’s Orlando, Florida-based EA Tiburon studio. The game is instead being handled north of the border, by a special Revolution-focused development group within EA’s Burnaby, British Columbia studio.

Given that EA has dedicated a specific group to Revolution development, it stands to reason that the game will take advantage of the console’s unique capabilities. While many details will have to wait until E3 kicks off, GameSpot was given an advanced scouting report that said that the gameplay will make extensive use of the Revolution controller’s motion-sensing capabilities.

Players will hike the ball by mimicking a quarterback receiving the ball from the center, and then pass it to a receiver by making a throwing gesture with the free-hand controller. The faster the passing motion, the more of a bullet pass it becomes (in previous Madden editions, bullet passes were made by holding the passing button down longer).

Kicking the ball will be accomplished by sweeping the controller up as if it were a kicker’s leg striking the ball. A fast, level swing will make for a hard, straight kick.

The Revolution controller will also come into play when running the ball, as jerking the controller left or right will make the ball-carrier juke to either side, while shoving it straight ahead will make him stiff-arm the opposition.

Nintendo Revolution becomes Wii?

April 27, 2006 By Andrew Hughes Leave a Comment

“Introducing … Wii.

As in “we.”

While the code-name “Revolution” expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.

Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.

Wii will put people more in touch with their games … and each other. But you’re probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like “we,” which emphasizes this console is for everyone.

Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive “ii” spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.

And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that’s Wii. But now Nintendo needs you.

Because, it’s really not about you or me.

It’s about Wii.

And together, Wii will change everything.”

WE… WTF!?!

Eight Hours Later…

April 18, 2006 By Andrew Hughes Leave a Comment

After a long and boring drive to Southfield, MI, I am FINALLY here. It took FOREVER! I did have a lot of things to listen. I listened to 4 wrestling podcasts, TWiT, diggnation, and more. So far this hotel is not worth 200 a night, but we are only paying $89.

Stupid Eastern Standard Time…

I am really lonely. It is the first time I am REALLY far away from Heather. You never know how much you love having something until it is gone.

Off to Detroit, MI [Southfield actually]

April 17, 2006 By Andrew Hughes Leave a Comment

Well it is coming tomorrow. I am taking the long drive to Southfield, MI. I guess it is taking 7-8 hours to drive there. I will be using my 7 day trial of TomTom. I hopefully will have a link up here so my friends came track my way there. I got tons of things to listen to and jam to. This should be a great trip!
